Municipal Elections: ACM and CNE share information on rights and voter registration of immigrants
The High Commission for Migration (ACM), in partnership with the National Electoral Commission (CNE), shares information materials on electoral rights and the requirements for voter registration of immigrant communities resident in Portugal, regarding the next municipal elections scheduled for 26th of September of 2021.
Voter registration runs until the 27th of July of 2021 and must be carried out at the parish council in the area of residence. Citizens who turn 18 years of age by election day may also register.
According to Declaration no. 29/2021, of 25 March, of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs, all Portuguese citizens (and Brazilians citizens with status of equal political rights), as well as citizens of the following countries, may vote in local elections, provided they are registered in national territory:
• European Union Member States (Germany, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Check Republic, Romania and Sweden);
• United Kingdom, with residence prior to Brexit;
• Brazil (without equality status) and Cape Verde with legal residence in Portugal for over two years;
• Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Island, Norway, New Zeeland, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela with legal residence in Portugal for over three years.
