The deadline of my visa passed. What can I do to remain in Portugal?

If you wish to remain in Portugal for a longer period than the one granted when you entered, you may ask the National Director of SEF the extension of stay, that is only granted, if the conditions are the same as the ones that allowed the admission of the foreigner in Portugal (except for duly founded cases). Attention: Without prejudice to lawful sanctions, and except when exceptional circumstances occur, the stay extension requests will not be granted, that are submitted 30 days after the deadline of the authorized stay period.

The stay extension has a limited duration, which varies according to the kind of visa in question.

The stay extension can be granted:

1. Until 60 days, in case of a special visa;

2. Until 90 days, if the interested person is the holder of the residence visa;

3. Until 90 days, extendable for an equal period, in case of a short-stay visa or if you have been accepted in the country without a visa;

4. Until a year, extendable for an equal period, if the interested person is the holder of the temporary stay visa, except in case of a professional activity, under contract or independent, temporary, the duration of which will not pass, regularly, six months, where the extension will only be granted until 90 days.

In case of relatives, for exceptional reasons, occurred after the legal entry in Portugal, the stay extension can be granted to the relatives of the holders of the temporary stay visa, but the extension validity and duration cannot be longer than the validity and duration of the visa granted to the relative.
