Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2021

Portugal is taking over the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) between 1 January and 30 June 2021. Portugal succeeds Germany and precedes Slovenia, countries with which he is part of the Trio Presidency. Together, they developed an 18-month programme, from which each Presidency defines its specific programme.

The Programme for the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the EU 2021 details the main priorities and lines of action and it is summed up in the motto “Time to deliver: a fair, green and digital recovery”. The Programme was adopted by the Council of Ministers on 17 December 2020 and it is in line with the Strategic Agenda for the EU.

Priorities: to promote Europe’s recovery, leveraged by the climate and digital transitions; to implement the Social Pillar of the European Union; to strengthen Europe’s strategic autonomy keeping it open to the world.

Lines of action: Portugal will work for a more resilient, social, green, digital and global European Union.
